Treatments in Erectile Dysfunction

What are the treatments used in ED?

Once the factors responsible for the erectile dysfunction are known, the specialist will recommend the most suitable treatment for each case, also bearing in mind the preferences and what represents satisfactory sexual activity for each patient.

Life style changes

The risk of having erectile dysfunction is clearly related to various diseases such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypercholesterolemia. On the other hand, the association of ED with such habits as the consumption of tobacco, alcohol and drugs is well known. In these cases, a radical change in life style may be considered as the first step in the effective treatment of erectile dysfunction. In obese patients with metabolic syndrome, the adoption of a Mediterranean diet and a reduction in calory intake may significantly improve their erectile dysfunction.

Changes in medication

We have already seen that certain medications may cause erectile dysfunction. A change in antihypertensive drugs, replacing beta blockers or thiazide diuretics with calcium channel blockers or renin-angiotensin axis inhibitors/angiotensin antagonists, can help in recovering erectile function. A change in a psychotropic drug can also help improve ED in those patients being treated with serotonin uptake inhibitor antidepressants.

Psychosexual therapy

In patients who have a psychogenic ED, treatments given by a sexologist will be very beneficial in reducing anxiety and improving the sexual and emotional
relationship with the partner.

Hormone treatment

Treatment with testosterone is indicated in patients that have a reduction in the levels of this hormone. Testosterone may be administered in topical preparations (parches or gels) or by intramuscular injection. Several studies have shown that androgen replacement therapy improves the erectile response to type 5-phosphodiesterase inhibitor drugs.
